The First 10 Minutes: Stop the Source

Water follows the path of least resistance. In a burst pipe event, that means it will spread horizontally along flooring, seep into wall cavities through every gap, and flow down to lower levels through structural openings. Every minute the source continues running adds to the remediation scope.

The single most important action is locating and closing the water shutoff. In most homes, the main shutoff is near the water meter — at the street, in the basement, or in a utility closet. Individual fixture shutoffs are located behind toilets and under sinks. Knowing where your shutoff is before an emergency happens is one of the most valuable pieces of home knowledge you can have.

Step-by-Step: What to Do When a Pipe Bursts

Follow these steps in order. Safety first — do not enter standing water near electrical panels, outlets, or appliances.

  • Step 1: Shut off the water — Turn the main shutoff valve clockwise until closed. If you cannot locate the main shutoff, shut off water at the street meter. This stops the flow immediately.
  • Step 2: Cut power if water is near electrical — If standing water is near your electrical panel, outlets, or plug-in appliances, shut off the circuit breaker for those areas. Do not enter standing water without confirming power is off.
  • Step 3: Open taps to drain remaining pressure — Turn on faucets at the lowest level of the home to relieve remaining water pressure in the lines and drain whatever is left in the pipes.
  • Step 4: Document everything before cleanup — Photograph and video the source pipe, all visible water spread, and every room affected. Include water line marks on walls, saturated flooring, and any visible structural damage. This documentation is your insurance claim foundation.
  • Step 5: Remove standing water if safe to do so — Use a wet/dry vacuum, mop, or towels to remove surface water from flooring. Every gallon removed reduces absorption into subfloor and building materials. Do not use regular household vacuums.
  • Step 6: Move furniture and valuables off wet flooring — Place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs on wet flooring to prevent wood staining and rust marks. Move rugs, electronics, and personal items to dry areas.
  • Step 7: Call a licensed restoration company — Professional extraction and structural drying equipment is required to prevent mold. Call immediately — 24/7 emergency response exists for exactly this scenario.
  • Step 8: Notify your insurance company — Report the claim as soon as the immediate emergency is stabilized. Provide documentation of when it occurred and what response actions you took.

Do not use household fans to dry walls. Fans move surface air but do not lower the moisture content of wall cavities and subfloor materials — and can spread mold spores from wet surfaces to dry ones.

When You Cannot Locate the Shutoff

If you cannot find or operate the main water shutoff, call your water utility's emergency line — they can send a technician to shut off service at the street. This takes longer but stops the source. Meanwhile, contain spreading water with towels and barriers, and begin documenting.

After the event, label your main shutoff clearly and ensure all adults in the household know where it is. A laminated tag on the shutoff valve with the date it was last tested takes minutes to make and can save thousands of dollars in a future emergency.
